What are Moulds?

Moulds are simple plants without the green color. They’re all around us feeding on other plants and animal matter and growing wherever moisture is present. You usually need a microscope to see moulds, but as they grow, they become visible and can become a health problem, releasing microscopic spores that aggravate symptoms of allergies and asthma in some people.

Moulds belong to the group known as fungi, which also include mildews, yeasts, mushrooms and puffballs. They are made up of interwoven filamentous forms that have rounded “spores” at their tips. These “spores” are very tiny and light, can travel on air currents and are always looking for a good place to grow. Because mould spores are always present in outdoor air, they will migrate indoors and be deposited on soft and hard surfaces, including building material surfaces.

What is Mildew?

Mildew is a mould. The term mildew is usually used to describe visible growth of mould on surfaces such as unpainted wood, leather goods, paper and books, clothing and textiles, upholstery, mattresses and rugs, etc.

Mould and Health Problems

Most of us can tolerate low levels of mould. However, for some people, even trace amounts of common indoor mould can cause allergic reactions such as nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, wheezing, and in more serious cases, respiratory illness. Some scientists believe a large percentage of asthma related deaths are caused or aggravated by mould. Studies have also linked black mould or Stachybotrys to memory loss and lung tissue damage.

Where do you Find Mould and Mildew?

Moulds grow especially well in warm and humid areas like bathrooms, but they can also be found in many other places, including mattresses. The best way to control mould is by controlling moisture.

To control mould and mildew, Hypnos reduces or eliminates moisture. By using natural fibres, calico wrapped coils and brass or silver air vents, the Hypnos mattress is designed to breathe, so that the cup of moisture you lose each night can be taken from you and passed out of the mattress. The end result is the inside of the mattress is cleaner and you wake up feeling more refreshed.
