Memory Foam vs Organic Latex Mattress: Which One Is Right for You?

Choosing the best one between Memory Foam & Organic Latex Mattress

When it comes to choosing a mattress, many customers get confused between two options; memory foam and organic latex. The reason is that both mattresses have a good reputation in the market and a strong customer base. So, deciding which one is better

Being one of the leading natural mattress stores in Toronto, we understand how important it is to get the right mattress for your bed. That’s why we have come up with this blog post that elaborates on the difference between memory foam and organic latex mattress so that you can choose a suitable one for your home.

Materials Used

A memory foam mattress is made of a chemical produced foam called polyurethane and a number of chemical compounds with an agent (reactive) to increase its density and viscosity. Polyurethane is made by adding water, halocarbons or hydrocarbons to a polyurethane mix. On the other hand, organic latex mattresses are made of natural latex or the milky sap extracted from the rubber-tree or Hevea Brasiliensis. The latex collected from the tree is processed by adding small amounts of compounds (about 1.5%) to stabilize and solidify the dilute sap and purify it.

This point of difference is subjective as the feel of each type of mattress depends on the user. However, generally, memory foam will give a feeling as if you’re sinking into the mattress. It slowly contours and takes the exact shape of your body as a mold. Many users find it extremely comfortable. While organic latex mattresses compress and bounce while giving a pressure relief sensation to your body. Unlike memory foam that ‘hugs’ your body, latex mattresses offer a more of a generalized compression around the body. This is preferred by customers who don’t like an overly enveloped feel of memory foam.

Temperature Control

Memory foam mattresses tend to trap body heat because of the chemicals present in it which causes discomfort while sleeping. But, organic latex mattresses are much more porous and breathable compared to memory foam. They have less heat retention and better cooling because latex is a natural product and the mattress’s construction allows it to have air pockets that improve cooling.

Toxic Load

As mentioned earlier, memory foam is made of chemicals which can lead to several health issues. It has a strange smell caused by off-gassing or emission of noxious gases. Prolonged exposure to these gases and chemicals can result in chronic health concerns such as respiratory problems, allergic reactions and skin infection. Also, they are not good for the environment because they are made of artificial materials. On the contrary, organic latex mattresses are made of natural materials that reduce toxic load in your bedroom. They are eco-friendly, hypoallergenic and all-natural. As a result, they are more expensive compared to all synthetic bedding items.

Memory foam mattresses take the exact shape of your body which can hamper your sleep posture. If your head, neck and spine are not in alignment, then it can lead to a backache and/or neck pain. That’s why many people choose natural latex mattresses because they are firm and give proper support to your body when you sleep.

Organic latex mattresses and memory foam mattresses both offer excellent qualities when it comes to comfort and feel. However, when eco-friendliness, support, temperature control and the toxic load are considered, natural latex mattresses have the advantage. The final verdict is yours as you will know better which one is the right choice for you. If you want a budget-friendly mattress offering great contour for a relaxing sleep, select memory foam; whereas if you’re looking for a firm, natural and ‘green’ mattress, then latex is your best bet.
