5 Tips to Find the Perfect Mattress for Couples

Choosing the best mattress for you and your partner is tricky. Individual specifications such as firmness levels, motion transfer and various other factors need to be taken into consideration. A couple can have different sleep preferences; meaning it’s common for one person to sleep well while the other person to stay away due to discomfort.

It’s a fact that a good night’s sleep is essential for good physical and emotional health. The stress of poor sleep can take a toll on even the best of relationships. Waking up with body aches and back pain, soreness, reduced energy and a grumpy mood is draining. Since a mattress is the basic foundation of a good rest, you need to select it very carefully.

Here are some key points you should consider when purchasing a mattress as a couple.

  1. Get the Right Size

Sometimes, there isn’t much space left when two adults try to stretch out comfortably, even if you have a full-size or double bed. This is because a full-size bed offers double the size of only the average sleeping space for two people. Opting for a king-size mattress is a better option, especially if your partner is tall and you have the space to place one in your room. Don’t forget to measure the dimensions of your room before going to buy the mattress.

  1. Look for Great Support

A good quality mattress provides even support to your body in different sleeping positions. Proper support is required to maintain a neutral spine alignment. However, couples resting together exert more pressure on the mattress which is why an ideal couple’s mattress should have individual weight distribution for each side. If one person is heavier, choose a mattress that offers excellent support and quality material to sleep on. This will ensure zero downward slopes in the middle of the mattress when the heavier partner rolls, thus eliminating interference with the support while you sleep.

  1. Check for Motion Transfer

Prioritize finding a mattress with little motion transfer so you won’t be woken by your partner’s movements. Studies show that the average person moves about 40 to 60 times when sleeping. If a mattress can’t dissipate or absorb movements like tossing, turning or rolling, it isn’t a perfect mattress. Memory foam mattresses provide great support and motion absorption, but they have a distinct feel that’s not perfect for everyone. An organic latex mattress is the better alternative.

  1. Focus on Comfort and Safety

These are two of the most important factors to consider when buying a mattress. Choose a mattress with a medium firmness with equal support and pressure relief for your body weight, type, and sleeping positions.

Most conventional synthetic mattresses are treated with toxic chemicals like formaldehyde, pesticides, dyes and flame retardants. They can cause allergies and various other health hazards like cancer when exposed to your body for a long time. An organic mattress is free from toxic chemicals and it also has antimicrobial properties. It’s a healthier and safer option for you and your partner.

  1. Customize Your Mattress

A couple’s mattress that offers dual comfort through customization is perhaps the best choice for you. This type of mattresses allows you to adjust the thickness and firmness level on both respective sides so that neither you nor your partner compromise personal comfort. At Dormio Organic Beds, we offer limitless customization for organic latex mattresses. Our Premium Collection, Premium Gold and Premium Plus Collection offer dual comfort, internal layering and zippered covers to adjust the respective sides of the mattress according to your needs.

Keep these tips in your mind when you go shopping for a couple’s mattress. A great mattress will help you relax and sleep better and turn your bedtime into the best time of your lives!

Moisture Control in Mattresses and Bedding

Moisture control in mattresses and bedding.

Often overlooked by traditional manufacturers, moisture control in mattresses and bedding is probably the most important factor in creating a successful sleep environment.

When we sleep we perspire.  If that moisture remains next to our body we get clammy and hot.  Often to alleviate this issue we will throw off the blankets causing the moisture to evaporate quickly and cooling us so fast we get a chill.  Then we repeat the process over and over destroying any hope of a decent night sleep.

To ensure the comfort of our mattress and bedding products we use two natural fibres – Wool and Alpaca.  I will expand on Alpaca later but first let’s look at why wool is great for moisture control.  Wool will continue to feel dry even when it has absorbed 30% – 50% of its weight in moisture.  Capillary action (wicking) moves the moisture along the fibres and away from your body.  Wool has a very fast drying rate so it releases the moisture that has been drawn away from you into the air keeping you warm and dry; not hot and sweaty.  Alpaca’s fibre is hollow and it works like wool but even better with faster drying and better capillary action.  It does not contain lanolin which we love for its antibacterial and anti-dust mite properties so we use Alpaca in pillows and duvets, blended with 30% to 50% wool.

In closing, research with tell you there are many synthetic wicking fibres on the market today.  They are used in sportswear and some traditional mattresses and show excellent capillary action. Unfortunately tests show they do not offer the quick drying ability of wool and also have the problem of trapping fats and bacteria in the fibre pores resulting in odour.  Most of us have purchased these high tech garments and have been stunned by the seemingly impossible to remove smell after just a few workouts.  Manufacturers combat this problem by adding even more chemicals to combat the odour – something none of us need in our chemical soaked environment.  This is why we have no doubt Wool and Alpaca are the best fibres for moisture control in mattresses and bedding.

When should I replace my old mattress and what do I replace it with? Making a switch after sometime, make it a good one!

If you are sick and tired of replacing your fairly new mattress because of premature sagging and lack of support, you are not alone. Today’s traditional mattresses are not lasting very long and gradually get worse daily as you sleep on it. Many people keep going through many mattresses, and want to finally settle down with just one. That almost sounds like dating rather than courting or marriage. Many get discouraged because they keep buying mattresses that don’t last very long, sag prematurely or just don’t provide the level of support that’s needed.

Sleep loss is a growing problem. We all recognize the sensation of satisfaction after one gets up from a deep/dead-to-the-world sleep. Unfortunately this sensation eludes most people. Too many in our society are too familiar with how it feels to lose valuable sleep, tossing and turning all night because the mattress keeps you awake.  So what is one to do!!

If your mattress is keeping you up, the time to replace it is NOW.

A natural latex mattress is an organic option. These organic mattresses will provide comfort and support for at least 20 years.  Latex is extremely elastic, resilient and durable unlike other foam or pillow top mattresses which give out, cave in, sag or bottom out in very short periods of time. A good natural latex mattress forms to the contours of the body and it quickly regains its original shape over and over and over. As a matter of fact a natural latex mattress will keep its original shape for 20 or 30 years. However, when shopping for a latex mattress, one has to be careful that it is natural latex and not synthetic or blended latex. Many claim that the mattress is 100% latex. One has to ask if it’s natural to ensure they are choosing a mattress with no harmful chemicals or toxins. Only natural latex is resilient and durable.

At Dormio we specialize in organic latex mattresses. All of our latex mattresses are made with natural latex, not synthetic or blended latex. One of the main benefits of a latex mattress is the fact that if produced correctly has the ability of being an ultimate option for an organic sleep system. Buying a blended or synthetic mattress is like buying a “gold chain” which not real gold but just gold plated. Browse our list of products on our site or visit one of our showrooms and experience what a healthy and organic sleep is all about. We will be more than glad to assist you and explain the pro and cons of various types of benefits in the market.

Where does the Rubber for Latex Mattresses come from?

Most of the world’s rubber comes from Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Indonesia. These countries are all located in South-east Asia.

Brazil is believed to have provided the world with the first rubber tree, Hevea Brasiliensis, but Brazil no longer plays any significant part in the natural rubber trade. Seeds were exported from the lower Amazon area of Brazil to London UK by Henry Wickham, a local planter acting for the British Government in 1876. The seeds were germinated at the Tropical Herbarium in Kew Gardens, London later that year. From there seedlings were exported to Ceylon (Now Sri Lanka). In 1877, 22 seedlings were sent from Ceylon to Singapore, where they grew strongly, and the technique of rubber tapping was developed. This is the process of extracting the latex from the rubber tree. Basically, an incision is made into the tree and the product then flows out. It’s very similar to the process we use in Canada to extract the maple syrup from maple trees.

Prior to this, the trees had to be cut down before the latex could be extracted. As you can imagine the rubber tapping method is much more environmentally friendly.

By 1900, most of the techniques and agricultural practices required to establish large plantations had been developed. One key technique was bud grafting. This is essentially a cloning technique which ensures that genetically identical trees can be produced in unlimited numbers. The rubber industry often talks about high-yielding clones, or other types of clone; and this is the basis of that terminology.

Over the next 40 years or so, the British in Malaysia and the Dutch in Indonesia cleared large areas of the rainforest to create rubber plantations. Simultaneously, local farmers saw the opportunities of rubber cultivation, and planted small groves of trees to supplement their own income. This gives rise to two types of rubber plantations in most producing countries: the plantations and the smallholdings.

Smallholdings tend to produce solid rubber, while plantations are essentially large-scale farms, with professional management. Most latex comes from professionally managed plantations.

We hope this has explained where rubber comes from and how it’s extracted. This is the key component in our natural latex mattresses which is known as the core. The core is made up of natural latex which is extracted from rubber trees in an environmentally friendly manner. When looking for an organic mattress, consumers should be aware of how the organic mattress is formulated and what it exactly contains.

Unfortunately mattress manufacturers are not legally required to list what the mattress is made of (in terms of materials, toxins, chemicals, etc) so consumers have to do their own due diligence.

To assist our clients and to make their organic mattress shopping experience much more stress free and enjoyable we provide our clients with unparalleled knowledge. We explain each of our beds, how they are made and what they are made of. Our goal is provide our clients with a naturally better sleep and our product line speaks exactly that.

Latex Mattresses………Because Sleep Is So Critical

latex mattressSleep is so critical, that it isn’t any wonder why everybody is trying to design a mattress that will help people get a better night’s rest.

Mattress manufacturers have tried to reinvent the mattress for many years using different materials for spring mattresses. Then the memory foam mattresses or the “natural” memory foam mattresses were introduced. All of them gained some sort of popularity and crept its ways into the homes of many consumers. Some were more comfortable than others but always with the use of many chemicals. The search for the ultimate sleep system still remains, one that is both comfortable and chemical/toxin free. Is it more important to be comfortable or safe while sleeping? Hard question, but I think both, no comprises.

You may be wondering now, is there a mattress both comfortable and organic. You better bet on it, the people at Dormio Organic Beds have been working on this solution and have created a range of options. The Dual Support Natural Latex Foam Mattresses are both comfortable and chemical/toxin free.

What is a latex mattress and why is it so comfortable?

Natural latex foam is very eco friendly since it is made with hevea milk from a rubber tree. Hevea milk is referred to as the “milky” sap from a rubber tree. It’s extracted much like the maple syrup from the maple trees here in Canada. Natural latex foam is durable and the latex foam mattress we offer is made with 100 percent natural foam which is expected to last more than 15 years.

Latex mattresses aren’t new, they are just becoming more popular and here’s why:

Latex is natural and stays naturally clean.

Latex is durable, unlike petroleum based foams which are very resilient and always bounces back.

Latex is able to take your body shape without creating pressure points, thus reducing tossing and turning during the night.

Latex doesn’t transfer motion. Your partner’s movements won’t disturb you.

Latex breathes, its tiny holes allow it to expand and contract with you, keeping you at a comfortable temperature.

Dormio has designed the most comprehensive latex line available anywhere in Canada.

Built entirely in Canada, the Dormio line up is designed for comfort. Not just for now, but for many years to come.

All of the units are zippered. This simply means that you can open up the casing and change the feel of your mattress by stacking the latex layers in a different order, or by simply adding new ones. You are not stuck with the same mattress feel forever, and since latex mattresses last for so long we think this a key factor when deciding what mattress to buy. Buy it for now because you like the way it feels but also buy it for the future because you can change the way it feels.

In addition to the latex, we also use a lot of wool. Wool is critical, as this allows us to avoid using chemical as fire retardants, as it meets fire regulations naturally.  Wool also adds “plushness” and controls temperature in our beds. And yes, the wool we use is completely organic.

Latex, combined with wool is the ultimate in sleep comfort. You can change the feel of your mattress anytime as your life changes. Oh, did we mention that most of our mattresses offer dual comfort. The mattress can feel the same throughout or the left side could feel different than right side, you decide. This means, you and your partner can each have the desired firmness/softness.

Our many years of experience tell us that the Dormio line up is as good as it gets. Contact us via phone our visit us at our comprehensive Mississauga Showroom.
