At the end of the mattress life cycle, left exposed to the sun, the rubber will break down because it is a natural biodegradable substance.

A Bit About Wool

Organic wool is a very important ingredient in the natural mattress “recipe”. The unique structure of the wool fiber makes it both breathable and moisture wicking. Thus, the wool layer effectively removes excess moisture and dissipates excess heat, allowing you to sleep in dry and hygienic comfort year-round. These properties explain why wool is a preferred material for hiking socks and other high-performance technical apparel. A mattress’s wool layer also acts as a natural flame barrier, allowing the mattress to comply with fire-resistance regulations.

It’s environmentally friendly … Renewable and Sustainable. Wool is a renewable resource that can be shorn from sheep annually. It is biodegradable and kinder to the environment than oil-based synthetics, which contribute to global pollution. Wool is sustainable. Wool from free-grazing sheep, treated ethically throughout their long lives, represents a traditional small-scale industry that once thrived in America. Today, many small organic farmers are returning to this sustainable industry to create clean and healthy wool that is produced without stress to the animals or the environment.

It’s a fire retardant … Wool has natural fire-retardant properties. It can resist flame without the chemical treatment involved in fireproofing. Most synthetic based fibres ignite easily, burn fiercely and melt.

It’s longlasting … Wool is durable. Laboratory tests have shown that wool fibres resist tearing and can bend back on themselves more than 20000 times without breaking. Cotton breaks after 3200 bends, silk fibres break after 1800 bends, and rayon fibres break after just 75 bends. Wool clothing will last for years. Wool resists spills, dries very quickly and is mildew resistant.

It’s cool, it’s hot … Built-in climate control. Wool is a natural insulator to keep you warm in winter and naturally breathable to keep you cool in summer. Wool fibres help to keep your body at the optimal temperature zone for comfort and rest. When used in blankets, synthetic fibres, down and even cotton fibres do not breathe as well as wool, and are more likely to trap heat in your bed. Wool buffers the extreme cold or hot air on the outside, keeping your body in that comfort zone.

It’s natural … Naturally absorbent! Wool fibre is the original wicking fibre. Wool fabrics can absorb up to 30% of their weight without feeling heavy or damp. Cotton fabrics begin to feel damp after 15%. The fibres “breathe” by absorbing away moisture from the body and releasing it into the air. This quality makes wool fabrics comfortable to wear in warm and cold weather.

It resists … Natural mildew and mould resistance. Wool’s natural resistance to mildews and moulds comes from the way it repels moisture, and lets moisture pass through its fibres without holding the moisture. Mildews and moulds require moisture to live and grow.

This wool comes from the region of Tierra Del Fuego in Patagonia.

The sheep are bred carefully and live a stress-free life, the Estencia (farms) are very large, 50km x 50km, this means that they only encounter humans twice a year, once to do the de-worming and once to get shaved.

The climate in Patagonia is very dry, filled with short grubs and rocks. Because of this climate, no agriculture has ever grown on this land, leaving the soil pure and organic. The temperature ranges between 8C and 25C, keeping their furs thick all year round.

The type of sheep is called Corriedale, they provide wool that is denser, more resilient to its shape and that has a rough finish. All these properties are excellent for mattresses, pillows and duvets.

English sheep farming is some of the world’s oldest and is recognized for its world-leading standards of farming integrity.  Sheep are grazed on a variety of different pasture types, including hillsides which are unsuitable for other farming systems, and which allow for effective soil management and natural free-range grazing. Efficient land management and flock rotation ensure that the land will continue to enhance high quality wool production for generations to come.

Unlike synthetics, the carbon footprint of wool is barely discernible. Sheep convert nature’s raw materials into a unique fibre.  The main source of energy is sunlight to make grass grow.  The UK is a signatory to the Kyoto Protocol on global warming and has embarked on initiatives to reduce greenhouse gases. Wool will save energy on heating and cooling.

A Bit About Cotton

Organic Cotton is grown without the use of any synthetic agricultural chemicals such as fertilizers or pesticides. It’s grown from non-genetically modified plants. Cotton covers 55% of the worlds cultivated land yet uses 75% of the world’s insecticides, more than any other major group. These chemicals pollute the air and waters and residual chemicals may irritate human skin. Pesticides used in the production of conventional cotton include orthophosphates which is highly toxic to farmers. Long term effects of these chemicals are not known.

Cotton grown in industrialized countries is saturated with pesticides and herbicides and absorbs all the chemicals that modern fertilizers deposit in the soil. Machine picked, it is full of impurities, oil, leaves and dirt.

Organic cotton is cultivated and hand-picked in the traditional co-operative manner that has been followed for centuries. It is grown organically without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides or defoliants to fertilize the crop, control plant growth or fight pests.   No synthetic chemicals are used to strip the leaves in preparation for the harvest or during the manufacturing process. Hand picking ensures that it is the cleanest, purest most resilient cotton fiber available.

All the cotton used in our organic products is clean and pure. It is woven to very high standards into the finest and very soft fabrics.

What is Pima Cotton?

Pima Cotton is the name for extra-long staple (ELS) cotton grown in the U.S., Australia, Peru and in very limited production in a few other locations around the world. It is grown in select areas where the cotton can benefit from a long growing season in a hot, dry climate. Its production costs are much higher than upland cotton costs in the same area.

The name was given to the ELS cotton being grown in the Southwest U.S. in about 1910.  It was renamed to honour the Pima Indians who were growing the cotton for the USDA in Sacaton, Arizona, where the government’s Pima breeding program was being conducted, but its origins date back to its cultivation in Peru.

The difference between Pima cotton and common upland cotton are staple length and strength.  Cotton is considered to be Pima if its fibres are an inch and 3/8 or longer.  Upland cotton typically ranges from 7/8 inch to an inch and 1/4.  Also, the strength and uniformity measurements are considerably higher in Pima cotton.

What is the difference between Pima and Egyptian cotton?

All cotton grown in Egypt is “Egyptian” cotton, but it is not all ELS cotton.  Egypt is one of the largest producers of ELS cotton in the world, but it consumes much of what it produces. The majority of what it exports is long staple cotton, not Extra Long Staple (Pima) cotton.  However, the description “Egyptian cotton” conjures in the mind of many consumers the image of the very finest and longest cotton in the world. Egypt does produce and sell some of the best ELS cotton in the world, but it amounts to less than 15 percent of annual global ELS cotton exports, and less than 35 percent of Egyptian cotton exports. Additionally, Egypt currently does not produce any certified organic ELS cotton.

What is the benefit of Pima cotton?

Its fineness and longer staple length makes Pima a premium cotton fibre.  Because of the fineness of organic pima cotton, more fibres can be spun into a yarn of a given count, which will enhance the feel, softness and drapeability of a fabric.

It takes roughly one-third of a pound of chemicals (pesticides and fertilizers) to grow enough cotton for just one T-shirt. (SCP)
