Learn how to reduce dust mite population in your bedroom

What’s a Dust Mite?

Dust Mites, are spider like creatures that are so small that you need a microscope to see them. The average mite is about 0.3 mm long. They are not harmful to humans, as they only feed on human and animal dander (dead skin and hair). Humans shed about 10 grams of skin a week providing ample food for these little creatures. Their favorite place is in the bedroom, where people spend a third of their lives, but they can be found in most places that humans lounge, furniture, carpets, stuffed animals, pillows, and even in the car. Depending on the temperature and humidity, a mattress can be host of up to 10 million of them and carpets can have colonies of 100,000 living in one square meter. They can defecate (poop) up to 20 times a day, this can build up to quite a bit, so that over 10 years a mattress can double its original weight due to the accumulation of dead dust mites and their feces, or a pillow”s weight can also double in weight in as little as two years due to same reason.

Dust Mite Allergies

Although Dust mites are not harmful to humans, some people have a sensitivity (dust mite allergy) to the feces of these mites. People that have allergies, are allergic to a protein that is produced in their gut, which cause the production of antibodies in the Human, these antibodies cause the production of histamines that are responsible for the nasal congestion. 18 – 30% of North Americans have dust mite allergies, and almost 50% of North American homes have allergen levels, that would cause people who were not previously allergic to develop allergies. It’s also believed that the feces of dust mites could be the main factor of 50 – 80% of asthmatics, and other allergic ailments. A strong exposure to the allergens of their feces, to babies in their first year of life can lead to lifelong allergy problems. Allergy symptoms can be any one or combination of the following.

  • Asthma
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Coughing
  • Facial pressure and pain
  • Waking up frequently
  • Hay fever
  • Rubbing of the nose in a upward fashion for children
  • Infantile eczema
  • Itchy throat, nose, or roof of mouth
  • Itchy, red or watery eyes
  • Nasal congestion
  • Postnasal drip
  • Runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Swollen, blue-colored skin under your eyes
  • Watering eyes

These conditions make the dust mite allergy symptoms worse,

  • high humidity
  • Poor ventilation
  • temperatures that are above 70 F / 20 C
  • tobacco smoke or car fumes.

Ways for getting rid of dust mites

Although it would be impossible to completely eradicate them, but there are ways for getting rid of dust mites so that their numbers can be greatly reduced and give allergy relief.

Attack plans

1)  First place to focus attention would be the mattress and bedding, since most people spend a third of their time sleeping on their beds within close proximity of the dust mite feces that cause allergy symptoms. Washing all bedding in hot water 130F/54C once a week.

Also giving your bed a chance to air out each morning can greatly reduce their numbers, give it a little time to air out before, it gets made up.

2)  Vacuum with a vacuum cleaner that has a HERPA filter

3)  Sun and beat the dust out of your mattress will help dispose of excess mite feces, as well dust and other allergens.

4)  Dust mite mattress and pillow covers are the first line of defense creating a barrier between the person and the mites. Sleeping on dust mite proof mattresses, is the best option to greatly reduce numbers, Natural latex mattresses are dust mite resistant.

5)  Use pillows made of latex and wool.  Replace down duvets with wool or silk duvets.

6)  Reducing the temperatures and humidity in the bedroom can also great help reduce their reproduction. Reduce humidity below 50%, and the temperature below 70F/21C.

7)  Air out the bedroom during the day time can help reduce humidity

8)  Airing out pillows in the hot sun, as well as washing them in hot water, will kill them as well as remove excess feces. Seriously consider replacing your pillows with latex pillows.

9)  If hot water, for some reason is not an option, try freezing them, placing sheets and bedding in the freezer for a 24-48 hour period has found to be a very effective method to reduce their numbers.

Why a Latex Mattress?

Latex mattresses have been around for a very long time, and have become popular because of their sturdiness. There’s never a need to flip them, they won’t sag within the center and they won’t  loose their springiness. You are guaranteed anywhere from 20 to 40 years of usage.

There are 3 types of latex mattresses

100% Latex is made out of the sap of the rubber trees

Blended Latex is a mix of pure and synthetic Latex

Synthetic Latex contains no pure latex

Most Latex mattresses in today’s marketplace are made from blended latex or synthetic latex. Only stores that specialize in latex will carry mattresses that are 100% natural latex. Most mattresses that claim to be latex, only have a 2-3 inches of latex on top. You have to really investigate the product construction to really find out what it’s made of.

There are two methods of processing latex.

The Dunlop latex which is available in 5 firmnesses, was developed in the 1950s and the most popular.
The Talalay latex is a bit softer but most always blended. Talalay latex blends extra synthetics into the mattress, and may be up to 100% percent synthetic. 100% pure latex talalay mattresses don’t exist in the market, most are a blend of 80% artificial / 20% pure latex.

Natural latex lasts a lot longer than blended or synthetic latex and is much more comfortable as it does not break down as quickly.

Are natural latex mattresses very expensive?

They cost just a bit more than a good quality coil mattress, but they are much better value. You may have to replace a standard coil mattress 3 to 4 times before you have to replace a natural latex mattress.

Most good quality natural latex mattresses also use organic wool and organic cotton and most are built in layers to adjust comfort levels. A good quality latex mattress will also be constructed to provide each sleeper with supreme comfort, long-lasting support and provide correct natural body alignment using healthy natural materials. Each side can be customized to match the sleeper’s body weight, shape and desired comfort.

Power Bases

A good adjustable bed frame or power base is as important as the mattress itself. The purpose of the power base is to support the adjustable mattress bed properly so you can get a healthy and comfortable sleep.

Power bases can be adjusted as per our requirements. The reclining angle in a power base provides our body good support and hence it is very much recommended for people with back problems and neck pain.

This is the reason why doctors recommend them to people with bad backs and even hospitals use these beds to ensure maximum comfort.

When we sleep on these power bases in a reclined position, the pressure exerted on our back is minimal hence these beds can provide instant relief to people with back aches.

These beds are highly recommended to people recovering from accidents and even for individuals who spend many hours in front of the computer.

Lets us tell you a bit about silk………………………….

Silk bedding is a perfect cooling choice in the hot summer months and a warm cozy choice in the winter.

How can it be both?

Silk is breathable so it wicks away the moisture from sweat, keeping a person cool and comfortable.  It is also a naturally draping fabric that gently hugs the body, eliminating air pockets and thereby holding in body heat better which will keep a person warm in the winter.  It is a self adjusting fabric that seems almost magical.

Silk is Hypoallergenic

Silk is made from the cocoons of silkworms.  Like nearly anything in nature, there are natural occurring substances in the cocoon of the silkworm that protect from various threats. Because the process of turning those cocoons into silk is a gentle one that does not strip away those natural substances, the benefits of them are still in the silk when you purchase silk bedding.  Dust mites, mold and funguses all do not like those substances and stay away from silk. This means that a silk duvet is a perfect choice for people suffering from asthma and from certain types of allergies such as being allergic to dust mites.

That means that a silk duvet, unlike down filled duvets, is not a haven for dust mites.

Durability

A fibre of silk that is of the same diameter as a fibre of steel is said to be stronger than the steel.  That is pretty durable, although it is important to know that all silk is not equal. Cultivated silk is more durable than wild silk because silkworms grown in captivity are fed an exclusive diet of mulberry leaves and care is taken to ensure the cocoon each of the silkworms weaves is kept intact, so that when it is softened and unwound into a silk thread filament, it stays in once piece.  And as amazing as it sounds, a single cocoon of a cultivated silkworm can be up to 1600 yards long!

Silk will not deteriorate over time because of its natural fungal repellency and because chemicals are not used in processing.

Easy to Care For

Silk duvets are easy to care for and are nearly maintenance free.  A silk duvet can have a duvet cover on it to protect it.  You can wash the cover regularly and air out the silk duvet periodically.  The silk duvet should not need to be cleaned because it naturally repels mold, mildew, and dust mites.
